The Difference Between Morning & Afternoon Snowshoe Hike

Our Snowshoe Hike is now also available as an afternoon departure.

So, what’s really the difference between Snowshoe Hiking in the morning and in the afternoon?

While both of these tours offer a view of some of Norway’s most stunning fjords from above, here are a few differences that might help you decide which tour is right for you.

Morning Snowshoe Hike:
Hike into the light

As you head into the mountains, the day slowly wakes up around you. The fjord grows brighter with every step, and as you ascend you will gradually get a better view of the fjords below. Along the way, your local guide shares stories and insights about the area, from mountain farm life to how people have lived and travelled through this landscape for generations.

Meeting time: 08:00
Duration: 08:15–10:45

Because the tour finishes before midday, it’s easy to combine with other experiences. Many guests choose to pair the morning snowshoe hike with our Winter Fjordsafari, or book our package tour including the Ægir Viking Dinner, available on our website.

Morning Snowshoe Hike & Ægir Viking Dinner

Start your day With a morning above the fjord and dine like a viking in the evening.

Afternoon Snowshoe Hike:
From Daylight to Dusk

Our new Afternoon Snowshoe Hike offers a completely different atmosphere.

As daylight fades and dusk settles in, you’ll head into the winter landscape with a headlamp. Snow, forest, and mountains take on a softer, more mysterious feel, and on clear evenings, the stars may appear overhead. As you walk, your guide shares local history and stories shaped by winter life in the mountains, adding context to the landscape as it changes around you.

Meeting time: 15:15
Duration: 15:30–18:00

This tour can also be easily combined with our Winter FjordSafari, which concludes at 14:00. That gives you time to enjoy a late lunch in Flåm before joining us again to spend the afternoon high above the fjords for a full day that blends fjord views from the water with mountain perspectives on foot.

What Both Tours Offer

Both Snowshoe Hikes follow the same route and include the same core experience.

The tour begins with a minibus ride along the Aurlandfjord to the Stegastein viewpoint, 650 metres above sea level. Here, you’ll be introduced to snowshoes, how to use them, and a bit of their history. Throughout the hike, your local guide provides insight into the surrounding nature, traditional mountain farming, and the cultural history of the fjord region.

Snowshoeing often compared to walking on sand, feeling light, floating, and surprisingly effortless. During the approximately 1.5-hour hike, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the fjord, the villages of Aurland and snow covered peaks.

At the turning point, you’ll be served hot beverages and have time to take in the quiet surroundings. The return includes a final stop at Stegastein before heading back to Flåm.

Age limit: 6 years
Experience level: Beginner-friendly

Final Thoughts

Both the morning and afternoon snowshoe hikes offer the same scenery, route, and guiding, but with very different moods. Whichever you choose, you’ll experience the landscape through both movement and storytelling, guided by local knowledge that brings the mountains and fjord to life.
